Wide tires are more susceptible to hydroplaning, we should all be nervous about other vehicles sliding all over the road. Maybe one of the busybodies will lobby against wide tires on the rear of sports cars.

Yeh! Lets go back to aspect ratios >80

Let’s be reasonable here.

60-70-series is the sweet spot.

50 is tolerable.

anything below 50-series is for looks and not worth a second of my time pondering.

It was in our lifetimes that new cars were equipped with 80 series tires. Nowadays, 55-60 series is the norm. Is that just middle-aged spread?

I seem to remember my aunt had a 1992 base model Corolla with 155R13 tires

What was the aspect ratio?

While aspect ratios have changed over the years, tire diameter has increased.

155/80R13 has a diameter of 22.8".

22.8" - 13" = 9.8", divided by 2, a sidewall height of 4.9".

2025 Corolla P205/55R16 has a diameter of 24.9".

24.9" - 16" = 8.9", a sidewall height of 4.45".

Going from an aspect ratio of 80 down to 55, tire sidewalls have been reduced by less than half an inch.

Front wheel drive SUVs today have larger tires than pick-up trucks had in the 1970’s and 80’s.

P235/55R20 has a diameter of 30.2", more sidewall than that 80 series tire had in 1992.

That sounds like the stock size for an early '60s Corvair.

There’s a post in a car forum ten years ago about someone trying to buy that size for their Corvair, and being told by the tire seller that they sell that size “only for trailers”.

Yeah but look how wide 235 is.

There’s no way to convince me of any benefits of those monstah size tires, beyond looks.

I seem to recall they were labeled 155R13, but the aspect ratio may have been 80 or 85

Explain that to a policeman. Ford Explorer uses P255 and wider tires.

Tires that wide are good for driving sideways, not in a straight path.

A 1983 Chevy Celebrity, a typical family sedan of the time, rode on 185/80R13 tires. Handling on those cars was a dream!

300-30R20s and the like are too sensitive at the helm for me.
