I have a dead short I checked using a 12 v test light between ground terminal and ground wire unhooked from battery old school is there a common cause mine started in heater and air controls

A vehicle with electronics will always draw some current, the test light method doesn’t work on modern vehicles. Connect an amp meter between the ground terminal of the battery and the ground cable to measure the battery draw.

BTW, that doesn’t prove that there is a short, only that there is resistance in the circuit, on a modern vehicle there will always be some resistance in the power circuit.
