The EZ Pass lanes are all separate roads with barriers between them and the main roads. They also change traffic flow direction to alleviate the greatest volume. We have a transponder on the windshield to read where we get on and off the toll road. EZ Pass users have accounts that the tolls are drawn from and we replenish it with our credit card. There are no toll booths for the EZ Pass system.
Theyāre already installed north 16 headed to the ski areas Dover, Rochester I believe. Been through them dozens of times now. If no E-ZPass transponder you have 7 days to pay the toll online. It is more expensive than having the transponder. If you fail to pay within 7 days, they send an invoice after 30 days or so and there is a service charge included- for each toll! Not one for the cost of invoicing, one for each transit through the tolls. Had to pay that more than a few times. Head north and back thatās 4 tolls and 4 service chargesā¦
Thatās all gone with the new system. No barriers, no separate lanes, only a large post and beam arrangement that spans all lanes similar to the road sign holders. Mounted above each travel lane is a transponder and camera system. You drive through normally and it either registers your transponder or takes a picture of your plate. You have 7 days to pay online if youāre not using the transponder.
Found a picture-
Is this a toll road? The system only works if itās a toll road or the toll lanes are physically separated from the on-toll lanes. The picture you post reminds me of the E-470 toll road around Denver.
Yes, and those are all toll lanes. It is sophisticated enough to resolve your vehicle no matter where you are in the lanes, even mid-way between them. The pictures are pretty good resolution, night or day or even during inclement weather.
The toll is based on number of axles/wheels. So if Iām towing a trailer, it can even figure that out and charge the extra for the additional axle.
I imagine with cameras or radar it could determine the size of the vehicle. My Model 3 shows traffic on the road beside and in front of me and line images of cars, SUVs, and trucks.
I use to know a guy who was one of the Software Engineers for the EZ-Pass system. Itās in Wakefield MA. They can detect Tractor Trailers or if you have an oversize vehicle or if youāre towing and how many axles.
We talk about this on my motorcycle messageboards. Now Iāll tell the story here.
Years ago I was on my annual bike trip to Florida. Down in Homestead FL. I used the Turnpike toll rd all the way up north of Orlando to a bike event there. Supposed to be toll by plate. I never received my bill back home in NC. Why? Because the Harley factory location for the plate is up under the āTour-Pakā (TP) (the center saddle bag). The plate āreadersā have to look down to see the plate. Couldnāt see mine. If youāre a cop in a car behind me he can see it fine. But from up high the TP covers the plate.
Whatās really weird is I was towing a small trailer for my camping gear with a car size plate on the back. You would think the reader would get that plate # and bill me that way. Nope!
Hmm, I guess I could put the tailgate down on my truckš
