Check Engine Light for Cat Converter came on---for a few hours

2016 Chevy Traverse, 3.6l, 140k.
A check engine light comes on. I take it right in to the parts store to get it scanned. The scanner reads the problem is the downstream catalytic converter. I can’t remember the diagnostic code.

I research this, decide to start with some Cataclean. The instructions say add when you have a 1/4 tank of fuel. I start the engine to check the tank, and no Check Engine Light. This was Monday, it’s stayed off since.

What should be my next step? I plan on adding the Cataclean when my tank finally gets down to a quarter (I think this is the first time I’ve ever wished the needle would go down quicker), and then should I swap out the air filter, O2 sensor, etc?

If the Check Engine light turned off, it means the problem no longer exists.

Drive the vehicle and see if the light turns on again with the same code.

When I had a cat code I was told to take it to the dealer where they would clear the code and replace the cat if the code came back. It came back and I got a free cat. But if the code is not there, the problem is not there. Got a warranty yet?

140k on it, so nope

It’s unlikely a chemical treatment added to the gas will solve a cat problem for any length of time. It’s possible the warning light turned on b/c of a signal acquisition glitch in the car’s computer system, not an actual problem. Cross you fingers for that. If not, and cat problem is the actual cause, the warning light will soon turn back on. Note that a diagnostic code indicating a problem with downstream cat does not necessarily indicate the cat is the problem. Shops use their scan tool to display the pre-cat and post cat O2 signals side by side to make a faulty cat diagnosis.

If you have comprehensive coverage on your auto insurance policy, then you’re typically covered against catalytic converter theft. So just leave it outside in a parking lot somewhere and the ins will pay for it once the converter is stolen… Problem solved… Just kidding…

I agree with tester, if light went out then the computer is not worried about it and neither would I until it comes back on… Make sure your maintenance is up to date…
