Catalytic Converter?

Can a bad catalytic converter cause my oxygen sensors to receive a “rich mixture/low mixture” message and for that reason set off the check engine light? I have a 1996 Tacoma.

No…This message is usually generated by the oxygen sensors in FRONT of the cat…Have you ever replaced the senors? They have a design life of 100K miles…

Also, clean the MAF, the air-flow sensor between the air filter and the throttle body. This requires a special cleaner…(parts store)…
