If the software is written by Microsquish, well, the term “Windoze Crash” will take on a whole new meaning…
What overly-optimistic proponents fail to grasp is “manipulating the controls”=/=“captaincy.”
In a sufficiently-automated vehicle, I might choose to “automate” the steering of the vehicle (as I can now automate the throttle), but I retain command authority, and legal responsibility in the event of accident.
You might get a computer to out-drive Emerson Fittapaldi…that doesn’t mean it has any business deciding if you should continue into bad weather, or if that wheel shimmy is bad enough to make an unscheduled repair stop, or even if you need to stop for gas or “get there on fumes.”
As for taking a nap…you’re betting your life–and lots of other lives, too–that immature technology will perform without snafu. The only words for that are “criminally negligent.”
(Actually, that’s a lie: I can think of PLENTY of words to describe it…none of which would survive moderation.)
In any event, legally, the licensed driver retains responsibility. (This has been tested to the point that a driving instructor got a DWI because he was the sole licensed driver, regardless of the fact he never operated the steering or brakes.) A LOT of laws would have to be overturned before “unfit” drivers could be the sole human occupant of a motor vehicle.
“taking a nap” reminds me of an old joke. I want to die in my sleep like my grandfather did, not screaming like the passengers in his car.
