I just had this issue with my taurus. When I pulled the trans pan I remembered it had been about 60k since I changed the fluid and filter. New stuff and it is good to go. The pan fluid was full of stuff so I assume the filter was near plugged up. Glad I noticed a slight shift shudder.

Status report: transmisson has been serviced, but I’m away for the long weekend. Will be back in town Weds to pick up the van and report the results.

Good news. I picked the van up this morning, and after the transmission fluid/ filter service and a new U-joint, the minor drivetrain vibration has also disappeared (the major shudder disappeared mysteriously before I took it in to the shop).
So, the bottom line is, it drives like a Caddy now, without having to repair/rebuild a previously suspect torque converter clutch.
