There’s a good chance it’s not the exhaust manifold. Should check the flex-pipe right at the bottom of the engine. Mine on my '93 Camry broken rather dramatically, leaving no doubt the exhaust was wide open. I’m sure they can die more peacefully because my '92 Aerostar had a flex-hose too. It didn’t completely blow out, but started leaking and making just enough noise to draw attention.
