Breaking this New York City law could cost you up to $2K in just 3 minutes

People have been calling it the wrong name then. Every time someone instructs me to use taconic to get to my destination, they would tell me to use the taconic highway.

The sign, however, always says parkway, but barely do I ever hear anyone calling it parkway. And I would say for a highway the speed limit is incredibly ridiculous.

It is also a very dangerous road because of curves and hills like you mentioned, but I see where people get frustrated with snail drivers on there and they would switch lane frequently which increases the chance of an accident.

P.S. There are certain places on taconic parkway one shouldn’t drive more than 50mph. Those places are very narrow and curvy. But places like in white plains should have higher speed limit.

Based on local dialect. I knew a guy from upstate New York who referred to all highways a “thruway”.

Compared to a city street it may seem like a highway but technically to be classified as an interstate or state highway it could cost hundreds of millions of dollars to be brought up to highway standards. Consider the low bridge clearance problem.

That is one of the reasons why trucks are banned from most of the Garden State Parkway’s length.

I-90 in NY is called the Thruway. No one I know called the other interstates (like I-81) the thruway

And, the later-built section (I-87) that goes North, from Albany to the Canadian border, is known as the Northway.

Just to add to the “confusion” - the section of the NYS “Thruway” that goes north-south between NYC and Albany is also I-87. Southbound, that eventually turns into the “Major Deegan Expressway.” But it also includes a spur - I-287 the Cross Westchester Expressway. Oy. Parkways, thruways, expressways, highways…even “Northways”.

I grew up in Orange County NY - if you headed out of NYC on the “Major Deegan Expressway” (I-87) which “is” but also turns into the “Thruway” (still I-87), one of the first “upstate” exits (Harriman, NY / Bear Mtn) was for Rt. 17 which was called the “Quickway.” But it’s supposed to eventually become the I-86 “interstate” - for like the last 20 years. Oy.

Keep it simple and don’t worry about road labels. Is is limited access or not? If not, 55mph is probably the speed limit for good reason (even though the real speed limit will differ). If it is limited access, I’d hope to see a min of 60 mph speed limit, depending.

And remind me again - to bring up the stupid old joke - why do we park in driveways and drive on parkways? Don’t take that too far. I’m not looking for an answer.

That’s what make it worse. The law then becomes selectively enforced. If a cop or the village or someone has something against you, they get you for all these violations like having a bird feeder to feed wildlife in your yard even though thousands of houses have them.

They allow commercial flights in Jamaica that are unable to do an instrument landing??? A pilot has to be able to land partially blind folded in training so they can’t see out the windows.

Doesn’t apply to city employees.

The airport’s automatic landing equipment might not have been working. Under repair, etc.

The “hood” comes off at decision height, because being able to see the runway is one of the criteria for deciding whether to land or go around. If they left the hood on they couldn’t see the runway so they never could make the decision to land. Then it’s just a matter of making the fuel last until the scene of the crash.
