I’m currently looking for a portable tire inflator and would appreciate some advice. My budget is between 50$ and 150$, and I’m hoping to find something reliable that offers good value for the price.
My main requirements are:
-
Fast and accurate tire inflation
-
Reliable performance and long-term durability
-
Easy-to-read digital display
-
Portable and compact design
-
Rechargeable battery with decent runtime
-
Auto shut-off feature and multiple inflation modes
-
Suitable for cars, SUVs, motorcycles, and bicycles
After doing some research, I’ve narrowed my options down to:
All three seem to have positive reviews, but I’m having trouble deciding which one would be the best fit for my needs and budget. If you own any of these inflators or have other recommendations in the 50$ and 150$ price range, I’d love to hear about your experience. I’m mainly looking for the best combination of portability, accuracy, durability, and overall value. Thanks in advance
I bought this in the “As Seen On TV” section of the Boscov’s department store in Connecticut:
Solid, heavy construction but compact. Display bright by day or night. Flashlight on the same end the 10-11" inflator hose screws into.
Automatic shutoff at pressure you select, in your choice of PSI, Bar, kPa. It also provides adaptors for basketballs and inflatable pool accessories. USB-C recharge.
Incidentally, I discovered by chance that the long green curled up hose supplied with many Slime 12V tire inflators is compatible with the connection on the Boscov’s model. This eliminates the risk of the inflator hanging from a tire valve between 11-1 o’clock on a parked wheel.
After inflating four tires to 33psi(PSI is selectable in half-PSI increments), I checked them all with Etenwolf’s newer digital gauge,
and they were all within 0.5psi of each other.
I would recommend any but the most robust rechargeable tire inflators for maintenance only (topping off), and not for from-flat status (10psi or under). Leave that task for the 12V machines that plug into the car’s power port.
Why buy JUST an inflator?
Gooloo makes a combined jump pack and inflator for $69 on the jungle site. This gives you a bigger battery for the inflator, a li-ion battery big enough to jump start the car and trouble light for a very reasonable price.
I have a different brand that combines all those features in one unit. It is small so it fits any car. Previously I had similar packs with a lead-acid battery (a sealed, motorcycle sized battery) that were larger, heavier and the batteries died after a few years. The Li-ion units don’t have that problem.
I personally get very tired of keeping all my rechargeable items charged. Thus, I have a inexpensive 12 volt battery charger. You could add a 110 volt to 12 volts power supply to items that are far from a car. As far as calibration goes, any charger you get should be compared with a high quality tire gauge, over your entire range of use. If you don’t like this idea, then my next choice would depend almost entirely upon battery life, since a low or dead battery means it is just a paper weight.
I too have the jump pack that includes an inflator that Mustangman had, Stanley Power Station “Fatmax”. The sealed lead acid batteries do need to be charged on a monthly basis, even when not use, I learned this from reading the instructions for my girlfriend’s handicap scooter. The tire pump works well but is grossly inaccurate, mine inflates more than 4PSI over the PSI selected.
I had one of those Stanley Power Stations. Good unit, and yes the gauge was useless.
My current model has an electric pressure gauge. You can set the pressure to what you want, press the start button and it inflates to the requested pressure and stops. The air fitting is a locking type so hook it up, select a pressure, press START and walk away. It is this Lokithor unit bought from the jungle site. $99
Ryobi is worth considering, especially if you have other tools that can use the same battery. I currently have the ONE+ 18V Cordless Dual Function Inflator/Deflator, which replaced a similar inflator that lasted for many years.
I would add this one to your list. My wife and I have had one for a few years and have found it to be excellent. It checks all your boxes.
