Auto Repair Shops charging 3 to 4 percent extra if you use a card to pay

I don’t have to use pin number or sign. I just hold card near the machine , same for the gas station I use.

I haven’t signed in years: Mallwart, Smith’s (part of Kroger’s), Ace, True-Value, Target, Trader Joe’s, Home Depot, Lowe’s, gas stations… never ask me (or anyone) to sign.

That’s rare.

Must be a small rural store.

Most places don’t require you to sign anymore. But many restaurants do and small businesses.

If someone does not want to use a credit card that is their loss. I have not had a retail store ask for an extra charge to use my card and stuff is the same price whether I use c. card, check, cash or debit card so why not get the cashback from the c. card account.

Exactly. We can’t seem to hold people responsible for their own poor decisions anymore.

Last year a friend called asking for car advice. Seems his 12 year old car quit and needed a $4000 repair and he asked what he should do. I said fix the car. It may not seem to make sense to dump $4000 into a 12 year old car, but you get the value from driving it for a couple more years and then still having something to sell or trade in. Then he tells me he still owes money on this car.

You’re making payments on a 12 year old car?? Dude…

Anyway, 2 weeks later he comes by with a new ride. Seems the dealer took his broken down car on trade and got him into a 2 year old model. And he was happy about how his monthly payments are lower than they were before. Yuck.

It’s different in my area, apparently. I have never had to enter a PIN to use my debit card, and no businesses in my area require a signature–except for one restaurant that I patronize regularly.

I think that the addition of a chip to cards has changed the process for most merchants.

138 stores, 10 western states, 20,000 employees

Many debit cards around here have a chip but not tap to pay yet. That is evident by the number of people I see inserting chip cards (in case someone doubts) including myself. My credit card has had tap to pay for several years. I’m not sure that pay station at the grocery store has tap to pay option- never use credit to buy groceries…I noticed up to a couple years prior, Walmart and similar stores do not require PIN entry for purchases below a certain threshold- maybe $50?

First of all quit looking at people as they are paying. It’s rude. Normally at the grocery stores you just put your pin in. Other times a pin is not required. Maybe depends on the amount. I don’t know and don’t particularly care. At both ace hardware and th3 local farm store, I have to scribble my signature with my finger. Again I just do what they want. I think it is not anything consistent and you can’t just make broad statements like this.

But quit spying on people as they check out. It’s none of your business.

It not really necessary to spy on people as they are paying… depending on the store.
At the supermarket that I patronize most often, the self checkouts are labeled as to which ones accept only cards, and which ones accept cash and cards.

At last count, they have 3 checkouts for cash & cards, with 9 more for “cards only”.
And, simply tapping your card (debit or credit) completes the transaction.

Since we are on this cash or card nonsense. The local grocery store I use has a policy of walking people who flash large amounts of cash to pay to their vehicle . Another of Dave Ramseys stupid ideas of carrying an envelope full of money around.

I keep 20s and higher in my billfold and the rest in my money clip in my pocket. If someone approaches me for a handout, I never show my billfold but just what is in my pocket.

The most I’ve ever won at a casino was a couple thousand and they never offered to walk with me but I do take note of anyone following me depending on the time. My nephew stopped and invested one dollar and hit thev$10,000 jackpot. The guards did walk him out. Yeah don’t go flashing cash.

I don’t know what level Walmart might require a signature, I know I have gone close to $200 in purchases.
My Ace however has me sign for every charge.
I understand checking ages for spray paint&alcohol, but for fuel injection cleaner! However, anyone of any age allowed to go to the store by themselves can get all the nitrous oxide they want from the dairy case.

I got carded when I bought charcoal lighter fluid for the grill in prep for the 4th of July, the check out young lady and myself both thought it was strange…

When that happens I stick the can up to my nose and say, '100 hits for $3.87!"

That’s funny. I’m standing there waiting I’ll look at anything I please. I’m 6+ feet away from you so you can feel safe I’m not stealing your info

But at that distance you can’t be sure if it a credit card or a debit card which is none of your business anyway. Also many of us never carry a balance on our credit cards and enjoy the cashback .

If you spent some time actually reading the thread, I explain how to differentiate between them, I won’t explain it again. Things I observe about you while I’m standing there you’ll just have to accept while you’re out and about in public spaces. If I develop an interest in observing how people pay, then you can bet I’ll watch you momentarily as you fumble around to cash out.

I did a web search and that is Winco grocery chain. Their prices had better be at least 3 percent lower than Walmart or any other store I can use. Why should I go there and give up the rewards of my card and convience of Tap and Pay for carrying cash or writing a check and not save any money?

My son who struggles to keep weight up during the spring and summer has discovered the value of Winco. Great place to load up on meat.

I don’t know about Walmart but the prices are lower than the Kroger/Albertsons family of stores that are near my house. Their produce section is also quite large, fresh, and has items that you can’t always find at a mainstream store. They don’t have gas stations though.
