Auto Parts Markup?

AutoZone, advance Auto, and O’Reilly are more visitsble, Napa is nearby but more convenient bfor the technical college.

Have a part number? I would like to look up US prices, my last bosh O2 sensor was $88 at napa

I don’t buy much at AZ but I had a gift card and checked the prices of Mobil 1 there for something to buy. I don’t remember anymore the actual price but it was way way higher than the farm store. Same thing for some of their other chemicals. Nothing wrong with shopping around but I don’t tell other businesses how to run their business (usually). Sometimes I’ll tell people they aren’t charging enough.

Were you comparing apples to apples . . . or apples to oranges?

Were you comparing the price of Mobil 1 at Autozone to Mobil 1 at the farm store?

Or were you comparing the price of Mobil 1 at Autozone to house brand synthetic at the farm store . . . ?!

By far the best prices near me for oil is Walmart and I don’t even have to go into the store. I can buy it with my grocery order and they will com e out and put everything in my trunk for the in store price or with a $35 order, they will ship it to me. Not a good price on filters though, I buy Toyota filters for $5.95 at the Toyota dealer.

I’ve found the same thing here

The local Toyota dealers . . . all of them, near as I can tell . . . have surprisingly good prices on their engine oil filters

But it’s a far different story when it comes to all other filters, such as transmission filters, cabin air filters and engine air filters

5 qt Mobil 1 to 5 qt Mobil 1 Oranges to oranges. Do I look stupid? No need to answer.

I asked because there are constantly guys on this forum making invalid comparisons

Including regulars

It was a legitimate question

Comparing Napa Canada to Napa U.S. the Upstream o2 sensor for my '15 Forester is is $160 in the US, $210 USD in Canada ($278 Canadian) for the same part#. But basically even on the other sensor.

You’d save $40 on either sensor buying the same part through Amazon.

If you trust that the seller on amazon is not selling a knockoff part.

To avoid that question, I don’t post my picture. I also don’t trust that I am getting genuine auto parts om Amazon or Ebay. For things other than auto parts, Amazon seldom shows me good prices anymore. For gifts I used to senf Amazon gift cards, now I send money via Zelle, they can use that anywhere.

I don’t know what question but I’ve noticed that on Amazon too. Wife uses them for the two day shipping but I don’t much.

But holy cow I just noticed this thing is past 600. Maybe that’s why we don’t have Rant N Rave anymore. Any subject can be explosive.

Gotta make a living🤷🏻‍♂️ It sounds unfair but if you don’t like it then next time buy your own parts and just pay the mechanic his labor. Shop is not gonna charge you a warranty fee on the part and everyone’s happy.

Very few shops will do that and if the part is bad then then customer will pay to have it removed .
I have a feeling that you would not be my favorite mechanic.

Agree

I have great sympathy for anyone that has to deal with the general public.

Wow, this thread is back again? It’s like that old girlfriend, just when you’re sure you’ll never hear from her again, she shows up out of the blue.

I have said before, what makes a good mechanic and what makes a good service writer are almost mutually exclusive. I have great respect for most of the people who work the counter in this business.

Except the mindful shop manager/business owner won’t be happy. We just can’t afford to work on a car for 30% less than all the other work we have here. When I was young and just starting out in this business I worked for a shop where the owner had a simple answer for people bringing their own parts. We would gladly do the work with no warranty and we would charge double the labor we quoted if using our parts. That got rid of those people pretty quickly.

My mechanic has so much work that he doesn’t do any work without an appointment. He also does not use customer parts period. Hi prices are fair and reasonable, I have seen him call people that were told by another shop that their car needed xy or z that they could pick up their car because nothing was wrong with it.

If he let people bring their own parts, he would raise his labor rate to make up for the lost revenue. Why should other customers pay more because you want to bring your own pwrts

Just loan someone you never want to see again 20 bucks, works for me!
