Ask Someone: 2024 Nissan Altima #1748975077

My car burns more gas between half full and empty than it does from full to half full, why?!!!

Welcome to Car Talk as your question was redirected here…

Because your gas tank is not square…
Take your total amount of miles driven from full to almost empty and divide that number in 1/2, now fill up and drive that 1/2 number and that is your true 1/2 a tank… easy math, if you get 400 miles to a tank of gas, then fill up and drive 200 miles and look at your gas gauge, that will be a 1/2 a tank of gas…

The mechanism that reports the fuel level will be made for many different cars. You are reporting that the precision of this system is poorer around the half full mark. If you think about it, the only place that you really need the system to be highly precise is around the empty mark. Now, your observations are improving the precision around the half mark. Remember that if you are about to journey across a 200 mile desert with no gas stations.
