Are Obamma's numbers correct?

As we all must of heard of the senators advice of maintiance and tire pressures.Help me do some math. How much oil can be saved by these measures? We need to know

1.Average gain from proper inflation

2.Gain or loss from maintiance or lack of

3.How much fuel do we use?

4.How many barrels from new wells?

Lets do the math and see if he is out of line.

My guess is that the numbers are “true” but don’t really represent a realistic situation. I doubt if they were intentionally misleading, but it is easy to fall into one of those errors. BTW, I suspect any numbers that come out of either camp needs to be taken with more than one grain of salt.

Do we need to know this? Don’t think so, but hey, being a lib like Lord Obama, and should he get the nod in November, who knows, we might see “tire inflation check points,” where for every psi of too little pressure, you could be fined. I’m sure there are takers out there for this…

The quick answers:

  1. 1-2MPG if you’re 10psi low according to tests.
  2. Varies greatly depending on age and model-could be 2 mpg or it could be 8mpg.
  3. Too much.
  4. Not enough.

My math says we have a long way to go.

Don’t know about these numbers, but I heard him on CNN at lunch - absolute BS, regarding the ‘undrilled acreage’ line. This is a complete red herring - all available land drilling rigs in the US are already drilling the best leases out there. Opening up offshore acreage, with the potential for world-class fields, could bring in offshore rigs.

Also, the leases his says should be subject to ‘use it or lose it’ are each subject to the contract that both the landowner and the oil company signed. He is proposing exactly what Chavez has done in Venezuela - expropriation of private assets (legally binding leases) by the government. Nice…

I would not put much faith into anything a political hack says, and especially a Socialist one.

Wouldn’t it be great to have some actual people that knew what they were talking about discuss legitimate options? Then have politicians that could analyze these options and come to some resolution for the future?

There isn’t ANYTHING right about this guy.

actually there is everything LEFT about this guy!

how much are we gonna get from him? that is the question.

After reading his book, I commented to a friend that he’s the smartest guy to run for president for a long time. He said that’s why he can’t win. People will resent him too much. I am beginning to see that he may be right.

There’s little doubt he’s intelligent, but that doesn’t mean he would be a good leader, or have the correct solutions. I’m not saying he’s right or wrong, but history is littered with brilliant people who make awful decisions or can’t grasp elementary human psychology.

inflation stations are better than what granpa john want’s. he would stop and make you show your passport the blow up your car and blame it on alka eeeda. if he can remember that.

                                                                  waldo45

Oh, I agree with you completely. The thing I worry about is that he hasn’t been a manager, like a mayor or a governor. But some senators have gone on to become decent presidents. Still, for some decades now it’s been a requirement to at least sound stupid in order to get elected. Obama does not sound stupid, and he hasn’t been afraid to tell blacks to clean up their act (e.g. parenting). He may have been on the left, but he is offending the left by taking on some center and even right positions (either for expediency to get elected or because they make sense to him–I can’t tell which).

By the way, on the oil thing that started this thread: it’s a bogus thing started by Rush Limbaugh. What Obama said was that things like maintainence and tire inflation would help a lot, and that offshore drilling would not be a solution to the problem. Rush turned it into the formulation either-or. Usual Big Lie deal.

The actual words: "“There are things that you can do individually though to save energy,” Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, said. “Making sure your tires are properly inflated, simple thing, but we could save all the oil that they’re talking about getting off drilling, if everybody was just inflating their tires and getting regular tune-ups. You could actually save just as much.”

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, “every pound per square inch of tire underinflation wastes 4 million gallons of gas daily in the U.S.” Survey information from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration shows that 27% of the cars on the road have a significantly under-inflated tire.

On a previous post we said that the US could not afford NOT TO DRILL everywhere there potentially was oil to be found. All the world’s oil producing countries with coast lines drill offshore.

Having said that, new oil discoveries will not reduce the price of oil, but they will reduce US imports and help the balance of payments and the value of the dollar. One half the US trade deficit is imported oil. This is the most difficult thing for a politician to say; aside from “get out of your SUV”.

Agree that whatever your hear from now till November is less truthful than any Madison Avenue advertising pitch.

mellott; thanks for the background info.

But some senators have gone on to become decent presidents

Wasn’t our last senator president Nixon?

Looks like no matter who gets elected, we’ll have another ex-senator for POTUS.

In case eneyone want,s to know . jimmy carter had solar panels put on the white house. he had a plane too have the U.S. to have 20% by 2000. plus he had incentives till then. It all stop when are hero ronney regan took over. he set us back 20 years. but he is someones hero and i bet they don,t know y.

                                                                  WALDO45

ANYTHING is better then the Texas Village Idiot we have now. When things aren’t going well (like they are now), people tend to vote the opposite of what they currently have. We currently have one of the DUMBEST presidents EVER. Obamma is probably one of the smartest candidates we’ve had in a long time. Does that mean he’ll be a good president…Not really. What it means is that when he presses the red-button he MEANT to…as opposed to our current idiot doing it by accident.

First off…if we start drilling off-shore TODAY…We won’t see a single bit of savings for 5-10 years. Second…There are potentially BILLIONS of gallons of oil in the Leased oil fields that the oil companies don’t want to drill on. The reason…too costly. Maybe!!!

We’ve spent more money on this Unwanted/unproductive war in Iraq then all the companies in the US has spent on alternative energy solutions. And what do we have to show for it…OVER 4000 dead Sons/Daughters/Fathers/Mothers. I think if we get our priorities straight we can solve this problem. We need something like the Manhattan project scale. The sooner the better.
