And into the muck we charge

That’s not funny! I hope you are staying on top of health issues with a doctor who’s into healthful living.

Some people get a warning, have a heart event and then do something about the cause.

Others aren’t so lucky. I lost my best friend in life (the guy who cooked in bacon grease) to a heart attack. No warning… heart stopped and he dropped dead at 62. We just lost our president of the golf course (northern one). 69 years old, dropped dead in Fort Myers last Thursday. He had the world by the butt. It’s a shame.

My daughter is enrolled in a doctor of physical therapy and is training for a triathlon. My son is training for a marathon.

I started late in life. 6 years ago, I started healthful eating and exercising and in a year lost 48 pounds (like shedding 1-1/2 cement blocks!). I’m practically a damn vegetarian, ha, ha.

I keep a daily log to keep from ever going back. I feel a hundred times better. Aerobic exercise is the world’s best anti-depressant! You wonder why it’s addictive?

Don’t wait to see if you are a person who receives a warning. You will never regret it.

I worked in a kitchen in southern Il, thermometer was 165 degree top end. It got stuck at 165 quite often, They were kind enough to provide us with salt pills, not like the kool aid I get in the media. Industries and cars contribute to global warming. Meanwhile Ron Johnson, Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) on Monday said he doesn’t think people should worry about finding solutions to climate change ― because historically, “civilization thrives” in warmer temperatures. https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/ron-johnson-climate-change_us_580e5039e4b0a03911ee05e9

Well, some of us are stubborn despite warnings. Dad had the first of 3 heart attacks when I was about 4 or 5. Through the magic of several angioplasties and a triple bypass he’s still with us at 88, though the dementia is taking hold. Uncle Lou died suddenly of a heart attack when he was my age (48).

I believe my chosen profession of auto mechanic has kept me healthier than a desk job would have. Being on my feet and moving all day must help. I will say running soccer practice with my 8 year old or baseball with my 11 year old after a full day’s work wears me out, but I think I’m doing ok.

Funny you say that. My last checkup was 3 weeks ago. Doc said it’s unusual for a man my age to not have any prescriptions or health complaints. Cholesterol and triglycerides normal, resting heart rate 59, blood sugar 93, all other results look “great”. Just need to lose weight and quit smoking.

Now that you’ve given me a complete physical, thanks for the concern!:grinning: Keep up the good work at your end. You have to be in shape to do all that car maintenance.

My body seems to retain heat a lot. When I was playing high school football (6/ 3" 225lb) it did me no good to take a shower after practice unless I sat down and cooler off for a half hour. If I just showered and dressed, I would just sweat through my clothes. The funny thing is, I have my second dog that hates the heat as much as I do. They were both West Highland White terriers. Both would get lethargic in the summer when walking with me, but would perk up in the first cool day of fall and would get ecstatic the first snowfall. I have found both of them asleep on the snow lying stretched out on their side, not even curled up. The first one made it to 16, this one is 11 and she stayed out 7 hours in 16 F for 7 hours before she would come in. I guess it is truly different strokes for different folks and I seem to be in the minority.

I guess I am getting old because I don’t want to work on my car outside any more until it is 20 or above.

I’m the same way. I have the sweating gene.

The biggest irritant is not sweating in general. That I can take. It’s sweating on glasses and in your eyes. Wearing safety glasses and fogging them up is another fun thing to deal with. Headbands only work so well…

I have NEVER encountered safety glasses, goggles, etc. which do not fog up

Even the ones that are not supposed to fog up

Kind of like glass cleaners. I’ve probably tried all of the different kinds and brands by now. And I’ve yet to encounter one which does NOT streak

Go to a diver supply shop and get anti-fog drops for scuba masks. They work pretty well, even if you’re going from the cold outdoors to a hot room.

Thanks for the advice . . .

It’s not that difficult…and not impossible for people of modest incomes.

Start out with buying a car with a 5 year loan, but keep it for 10 years. The last 5 years keep making payments to yourself to buy you next car.

The problem people have is SAVING.

The public’s growing entitlement to immediate gratification has grown to be an anchor around the neck for many. A young couple I know has a mortgage, 2 cars financed and a vacation on their credit card to pay off but felt they were entitled to an $8,000 bed that the store financed for 8 years. I was totally flabbergasted to hear them explain what a great bargain the bed was.

People don’t understand that if you spend now - you won’t have it later.

We didn’t finance ONE PIECE OF FURNITURE in our house. If we couldn’t afford it…we didn’t buy it. For the first 10 years of our marriage about 75% of our furniture we bought unfinished. I don’t think I paid more then $2,000 for all the furniture in the whole house. And most of that was on things like a Sofa and mattresses. I got to be pretty good at refinishing furniture. Then slowly over the years we started replacing our cheaper furniture with better. My daughter has most of the furniture we originally had. Still good.

Financing a Vacation - About at stupid as you get. We didn’t take expensive vacations when we started out. It’s one reason we got into camping.

Several times I’ve seen someone buying a $1,000 item and putting it on at least 4 different credit cards. OMG.

I know people who are in their early 60’s - no kids - income well over $200,000 and live paycheck to paycheck.

It’s not how much you make, but how you spend it.

From the time my kid could barely understand the concept, I paid him interest on the money in his piggy bank. It didn’t take him long to realize the benefit of saving instead of spending. And then, being smart about what he would spend money on to keep that compounding interest thing going. Of course, in order to maximize the impact, he was getting a fairly high interest rate. Had most of the relatives trying to get in on that deal

I remember trying to con my parents with the old “Just give me one penny this week for my allowance. And next week, just double it. That’s only 2 cents! Think of the savings! All you have to do is double it every week!”

Unfortunately for me and my private jet fund, mom and dad were not stupid…

I like that. Great idea.

In less then a year you’ve have been a millionaire.

I know! My one shot at riches, down the tubes! Curse my parents for being smart!

Not to go off the rails or anything but I liked the answer the kid gave to the interviewer when he was asked in the future who was going to pay for all the stuff the kid wanted? The kid just said with a straight face, “well socialism will pay for it”. Econ 101.

I missed that kid @bing. Was that a recent man (kid) on the street interview. Jay Leno picked up where Johnny Carson left off proving just how clueless the average person on Hollywood Blvd was.

It would be great if it was that simple. I ran, lifted weights, and I still had a heart attack. If it weren’t for a kidney stone that forced me into the emergency room, I probably would have died from the 95% blockage in an artery on my heart. I got a stint and after a setback I’m doing well. A lot better than a 56 year old neighbor that died last week. He was at the gym before work. He did that every day and ran half marathons. Workouts help you age gracefully, and that is how I use them today.

Exercise is another current trend. And I hope the weather soon falls in line with my enjoying that trend. Nothing too strenuous though. Biking 15-20 miles is my limit. My doctor is getting on my case regularly because I still eat like I did when I was working like a horse 12+ hours a day.
