I wouldn’t have thought that a vintage Aston-Martin DB5 would be used for towing, but one guy in The UK uses one to tow his vintage race car.
Many moons ago… I saw a Corvette towing a ski boat down the highway. Had to do a double take, as you typically don’t see that kind of thing. The Corvette, with boat, was keeping up with interstate traffic, though I’d hate to see what would happen if it had to stop all of a sudden.
More recently, I saw a Porsche Cayenne towing a trailer full of windows and other building materials. The Cayenne was very clearly overloaded; the front end was way higher than the rear, and the vehicle was doing about 45 on the interstate. In fact, it was holding up traffic.
I guess you have to go with what you got.
A match made in heaven.
At least the trailer and race car are very light… Seems a DB5 has enough guts to pull it.
Well, front engine, rwd full frame. Kinda like towing with a ranger pickup. What is legal tow limit of this car? I don’t think it is rear leaf springs though. Or is it?
It has coil springs.
These figures were quite impressive for their time, but many modern vehicles have a lot more power:
Power output 282–325 bhp @ 5500 rpm
280–288 lb⋅ft @ 4500 rpm
Still, it certainly has more than enough power for that particular towing job.
Rear suspension is probably upgraded, there’s a kit from Aston Works available.
I think for the most part, British cars are smaller than American cars. I watch lots of videos on British folks and they like lorries. And they have lots of diesel cars for mileage/tax issues and they tow quite well. They have diesel range rovers. Why not a diesel Aston?
The Aston Martin was a personal GT car, not a taxi. The DB5 was built in the mid-1960s and the first Rover diesel was built in 1982 (2400 SD).
I could do that with my slant six Valiant towing a bass boat.
No doubt. I’m sure many cars both old and new, small and large, could tow a ski boat.
My point was that a Corvette is far from ideal to tow much of anything. Or, if all you have to tow your ski boat is your Corvette (or Cayenne)…you may need to re-evaluate some things.
At least that’s my read of the situation.
The Cayenne’s not a bad tow vehicle, 7700 lb capacity it seems. However, VW got in trouble when it showed a Touareg (Cayenne twin) towing an Airstream in an ad. Beyond its capacity.
What could go wrong when a tow truck driver tries to repose a vehicle?
The newscast…
A short Video from up close and personal…
Well actually, a whole bunch can go wrong if the owner shows up while they are hooking up…
hmmm … Maybe I’ll watch “Repo Man” again this weekend.
