Alternate Puzzler: two drivers start at sunrise,

... one drives from city A to city B, while the other drives from city B to city A over the same route. (Assume sunrise occurs at the same clock time for both drivers.) They drive at constant but different speeds. They pass each other at noon and continue on their ways without stopping. The first arrives at city B at 4 in the afternoon while the second arrives at city A at 9 in the evening.

What time was sunrise?

This puzzler was submitted to Car Talk about six weeks ago, where it apparently went into the infamous Car Talk puzzler black hole. So I’m submitting it to the forum. Have fun.

The solution is self-verifiable; I probably won’t be back on this thread.

I’ll post another Alternate Puzzler on Saturday, Nov. 26th 2011. Happy Thanksgiving.
