There were never many Singer cars sold in The US, despite Marilyn helping them with their advertising. They were bought-out by Rootes Motors in 1955.
That looks like a Singer 9 Roadster for the American market. Singer didn’t change much so it could easily be a ‘39 all the way to a ‘55. Given Marilyn draped over the car, it was likely a ‘53 or ‘54 - she has the 1953 Gentlemen Prefer Blonds film look.
I still remember my mother’s joke after a Singer drove past us while we were walking. She said… It’s a good name, considering that it sounds like an old sewing machine.

Yeah, the British Car industry was RIPE with “good” names. ![]()
Anyone remember the Humber Super Snipe? Or that Jaguar used to be the Swallow Sidecar Company (good choice to rename the company Jaguar!) How about the Riley Kestral? Hillman Minx and Super Minx? Austin Allegro (the car that killed the brand!) Morris Marina, or Morris Minor (minor what? disaster?) Ford Consul or Zodiac? Triumph Herald?
Of course there were winners… Triumph Spitfire and Stag, Jaguar ANYthing! AC Ace, Jensen Interceptor (which sounds like a 60s secret agent TV show) and the alpha-numerics like the Aston Martin DB5, or the Rover 3500 (was that the number of build faults??) and the Daimler SP250.
That was quite a car, given its Chrysler 383 under the hood!
A friend’s father bought one, and the crankshaft snapped–TWICE–under warranty. The dealer took pity on him after the second disaster, and sold him a Plymouth Volare for a good price. Of course, that was also a disaster, from its prematurely rusting-out front fenders, to its persistent engine stalling.
Do you recall Riley’s slogan?
“As old as the industry, as modern as the hour”
I guess that they were pretty light, because–as a prank–my brother and 6 of his friends picked one up, and put it on the sidewalk.
Was that the movie where part of it was on some cruise ship?
Janelle Russell was co-star?
A million bucks is not chump change nowadays, but also not that uncommon
Nowadays the movie would be “How to marry a BILLIONAIRE”

Sheesh, talk about adding insult to injury.

Was there a car in the 1st post?? ![]()
I always like the styling of the Morris Minor. Quite a few around the U of M (Minnesota). Seem to frequently show up on Midsummer Murders.
