Here is the situation: used Mitsu. Mont. Sport, 97, 4wd, auto, a/c, V6, 185K miles, in need of engine repair. Asking $2,000. The owner says that the check engine light has been coming on for about 6 months and a mechanic buddy of his has messed with it but can’t fix it. It kept going dead while driving it. He did not know the code but said that the “plugs keep fouling up”. Should I walk away from this potential purchase even if I can get him to go lower on the price? What could be the problems?
NO…you should RUN. If this is a minor issue the owner should get it fixed. If a major issue you’re looking a some serious money to fix it.
Never ever buy a car with an undiagnosed operating problem. It’s like jumping from a plane not knowing whether or not you have your parachute on your back.
Run.
I wholeheartedly agree with Mike and Mountainbike. RUN!
At this point it’s a 200 dollar vehicle, not a 2000 dollar one.
Alrighty then, I will heed the counsel of the Car Talk forum. Thanks for chiming in and letting me know.
