The gear went into the oil pan.
Good thing they make the distributor gear out of a softer metal than the cam gear.

Can I just leave it in there? I hate to drop the pan I got fresh oil in there plis that would be more work and all

One last question. Some of the distributors on rock have cast gears and some steel and descriptions warn that one is not compatible with the other. Which should I get?
Cast gear.
A steel gear can take out the gear on the cam.
Think of the cast gear as a fuse for the engine.

The dizzy gear material properties must be compatible w/the cam gear. This was a topic discussed at length in Hot Rod magazine recently. Itās probably more of an issue for high performance engines than for neighborhood drive-abouts, but if you arenāt certain, stop by a Ford dealership shop when they arenāt busy, one of the more experienced techs there will know for sure which is correct for an 87 Ford 302.
