What would you do if a tire failure as a result of a nail in the sidewall happened when all of your tires were ~5/32" ?

I would buy one new tire of the same brand, size, and speed rating as the other 4 tires, and have its tread depth “shaved” to 5/32.
Not that many tire shops can do this, but if you do some searching, you should be able to find one. If all else fails, Tire Rack can do this for you, and ship the tire to you fairly quickly.
I agree with VDC. Alternative is 4 new tires. at 4/32 or less, I would go with the new tires. Possibly at 5 or 6/32
