2015 Toyota Camry accelerated on its own

just backed out of driveway and traveling about 12 mph and took foot off accelerator slowing down for upcoming stop sign when vehicle accelerated on its own. had to apply lot of pressure to brakes in order to get stopped. after incident vehicle seemed ok with no other problem for rest of day. Is it possible it could happen again? I checked floor mat and it was locked and had not slid and was in correct position , however there was water on the floorboard from snow on shoes and very cold temperature.

Don’t take a chance…get your vehicule inspected at your Toyota dealership.

I’d certainly have this checked out immediately. In the meantime, be mentally prepared to also put the car in neutral right away.

Certain year Camry’s had a presumed car acceleration problem. 9 out 10 times it was determined that it was the car mats. Drivers side mats come with hooks to keep mats in place. People don’t use them and the mats slide up and can interfere with the gas pedal.

CHECK YOUR MATS.

The accelerator system in your vehicle is a drive-by-wire system.

This means instead of having a throttle cable between the throttle pedal and the throttle body, your vehicle has an Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor, https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=6085959&cc=3308940&jsn=422&jsn=422, that sends a signal to the computer, and from that signal the computer operates the electronic throttle body, https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=6150048&cc=3308940&jsn=405.

These are the components that can cause unexpected acceleration.

See OP, he checked the mats

Any chance you were wearing boots? I have accidently pressed the accelerator while braking on several occasions while wearing work boots.

Note for the future, you may keep in mind tthe option of turning off the ignition.

The accelerator position sensor and throttle body control are likely a redundant design, meaning a one part failure shouldn’t be able to cause unintended acceleration. It would require two parts to fail. Such a thing is possible, but before going down that path suggest you just remove the mat on the drivers side for a while, wear less bulky footwear when driving, and see if the problem returns. Good ideas above to mentally prepare what you’ll do if it happens.

On a DBW throttle system, if you step on the brake pedal and the accelerator pedal at the same time, the computer see’s no reason to accelerate the vehicle while the brake is being applied.

So that can’t happen on a DBW throttle system.

The OP already informed us that…

no, as that can lock the steering. Yes, you have to pull the key out (I think) but the tendency is to do that after you have turned the ignition off, muscle memory. I’d stick with putting it in neutral.

Depends on vehicle and age:

You’re kidding? Right?

Toyota is the pioneer of this safety system.

No, your statement covered all DBW systems and is simply incorrect.

Toyota and Lexus added the brake override feature to more than one million 2007-2010 vehicles during the 2010 recall to bring them up to common standards.
