That is definitely an indication of a problem. Have you checked for leaks from the radiator, the radiator hoses, and/or heater hoses?

But, I have to wonder how long you have been using water in the cooling system, rather than the mfr’s approved coolant. Using water in the cooling system can cause problems, in case you were not aware of it:

Also, because modern engines do not take well to overheating, it is entirely possible that the engine has already been trashed. I strongly suggest that you get this vehicle to a qualified mechanic a.s.a.p.

That is a major possibility, along with a warped cylinder head, scored cylinder walls, and God-only-knows what other kinds of potential damage from prolonged overheating.

If you’re not seeing any coolant leaking out & puddling underneath the car, failed head-gasket seems most likely. That could explain the fuel consumption increase too.

An alternate theory is the coolant is in fact leaking out of the engine and onto the ground, hose or water-pump problem, and that’s confusing the engine coolant temp sensor, causing the computer to inject more gasoline than is actually required.

There are many reasons that your vehicle can overheat. here are a few…
bad radiator cap, thermostat stuck closed, radiator fan not working, bad head gasket, clogged radiator, leaking radiator, loose hose clamp and loosing fluid and pressure.

Good ideas by WW above. Besides leaking into engine cylinders and engine oil (crankcase) via faulty head gasket, coolant can leak out of the cooling system & into an automatic transmission too, internal leak, so good idea to check if transmission fluid is rising or fluid looks contaminated with this symptom.
