Often a driver must wait at least 5 seconds for the line of vehicles in front to pull away. The OP asked what holds the vehicle from moving for the first five seconds, why not answer the question?
Okay, the answer is: misuse of the feature.
One of the dumbest features my car has is hill start assist and itās an automatic. There are settings to select how long it assists after you release the brake pedal.
He says itās rolling backwards after 5 seconds which means it isnāt rolling back until after 5 seconds has elapsed. I think Nevada-545 nailed it - his car has the hill start assist feature, which holds the brake for 5 seconds or until the clutch is engaged.
ā¦ which leads to the inevitable questionā¦
Why is he taking his foot off the brake, but not engaging the clutch for 5 seconds?
I canāt speak for anyone else, but I hope that heās not driving around in my neck of the woods.
I release the brake and cover the accelerator pedal when I expect traffic to pull away after the traffic light turns green but sometimes there is a delay in front of my vehicle.
Yes, but if your car has a manual trans, I would assume that you would engage either the brake or the clutch before you allowed it to roll back for five seconds.
Whoops!
I began to quote myself.
Where is that coffee?
In one of my early replies I used the term ācarelessā about the OP allowing his vehicle to roll backwards before driving forward. The OP thought that was funny. I should have said careless and reckless.
Why would anybody take their foot off the brake until they are going to proceed? My foot is on the brake until the car in front of me begins to move.
Granted, on a flat, level surface, your vehicle may not roll with your foot off the brake and the clutch depressed, I have done that.
On slopesānever, nor would I allow my vehicle to roll backwards.
A lot of newer FCA vehicles have the hill assist feature which will hold the brakes until you get on the gas for a set length amount of time. Have it on my Durango .
Hill Start Assist (HSA)
The Hill Start Assist (HSA) system is designed to
mitigate roll back from a complete stop while on
an incline. If the driver releases the brake while
stopped on an incline, HSA will continue to hold
the brake pressure for a short period. If the
driver does not apply the throttle before this
time expires, the system will release brake pressure
and the vehicle will roll down the hill as
normal.
