My car does not coast when you take your foot off the gas pedal.
If you’re going downhill & shift into N the engine RPM drops & the speed remains relatively the same (depending on the hill).
Is this the way it’s supposed to be, or did they sell me a defective used car?
Why on earth would you do that ? Putting back in gear at the bottom of the hill just puts more wear on the transmission. Your vehicle is using engine braking to keep you from getting a speeding ticket at the bottom of the hill. You don’t have a problem.
Why would you DO this? Don’t it is dangerous.
Is this a manual transmission car? Or automatic?
depends on the hill.
Try parking on a flat area, put the shifter in neutral, engine off, and see how easily the car can be pushed. If you can, compare that to a friends’ similar car.
There is no engine braking when a transmission is in neutral.
