When I first bought my car, Audi told me to use the higher octane gas which here in California is 91-94 at Gas stations. I have been told by people who know more about cars than I that I can use a lower level octanes and that the 90’s are for autos in Europe. I am hesitant in switching. What say you?
The owners manual will specify what octane is required or recommended.
If it just recommends an octane, then you can use a lower octane. but engine performance will suffer.
If it requires an octane, that’s the octane that MUST be used.
Tester
Per page 186 of your owner’s manual. You can use 87 octane, but 91 octane is recommended.
"Fuel recommendation
The fuel recommended for your vehicle is unleaded premium grade gasoline. Audi recommends
using TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline with a minimum octane rating of 91 AKI (95 RON). For more
information on TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline,
please go to the official website
(www.toptiergas.com).
The recommended gasoline octane rating for
your engine can also be found on a label located
on the inside of the fuel filler flap. This rating
may be specified as AKI or RON.
Your vehicle may also be operated using unleaded regular gasoline with a minimum octane rating of 87 AKl/91 RON. However, using 87 AKl/91
RON octane fuel will slightly reduce engine performance. "
If it were my car I’d use premium, but that’s just me.
Do you really expect someone to reach all the way over to his glove box, open that box, retrieve the Owners’ Manual, and actually READ it?
I’d use the premium, and I’d use Top Tier, Audis have had issues with deposits.
