I have a Subaru Outback 3.6 limited 2012 which makes a clunking noise before shifting but only sporadically- not every gear, not all the time. Sometimes the car does it once or twice, then stops- sometimes the clunking noise happens more frequently. We have tried warming the car for five minutes and it still happens. We’ve had it looked at by 2 mechanics, one transmission specialist, and they couldn’t diagnose it. Any thoughts?
Does the engine rpm seem to increase at the same time as the clunk?
Yes it revs and then clunks and jerks
Indicates the transmission is slipping, common causes
- Transmission fluid low or worn out. (Fluid service.)
- Transmission’s internal parts (e.g. clutches) are worn out. (Replace or rebuild transmission.)
- Transmission controller or electric actuators faulty. (Easier to fix, but this cause is unlikely, trans shop could prove/disprove)
If your trans fluid level is correct and recently replaced, your transmission is probably going to have to be replaced or rebuilt. The parts wear out with use.

Ok thank you so much, I hope it’s just the fluids! I really appreciate your answer…
Just to be clear (cause that was almost too easy lol) the engine revs as normal then shifts and or clunks and jerks??
Or it revs to a much higher rpm then normal before finally clunks and jerks??? but otherwise revs normal when NOT clunking and jerking???
BIG difference… lol
