2012 Jeep Compass Steers like a drunk under acceleration

The situation must be different by location. There’s lots of multi-unit space-rental facilities in this area, most often used by folks who have more household stuff then their house can hold. I don’t think any of them allow car repairs or even allow storing cars there.

Yes, it might vary from one area to another. I Googled “garage for rent” in my area, and one of the sites that came up provided 19 garages, 8 of which are less than 10 miles from my home.

As to those multi-unit storage facilities, I know a guy who used to manage one of them, and he said that their business depended mostly on two groups:
People going through divorce
Hoarders

Do you know if they allow car repairs also?

The listings don’t specify whether–or not–they allow repairs on site.

People aren’t allowed to live in self-storage units, but it happens. I don’t think anyone would notice someone inspecting a vehicle’s suspension in a rented garage, without the ability to repair one, does it matter?

My query above was intended to ask the group member here if – in their local areas in the USA — there are facilities that you rent a garage legally allowing diy’er repairs. AFAIK that question hasn’t been answered. There are plenty of rental storage units available in the San Jose area, but I’m not aware of any that allow car repairs. It’s true that rules can be ignored, but if you did car repairs anyway, and an accident ensued, you’d be looking at a lot of trouble for yourself.

But it wasn’t the control arm bushings that was the problem now was it, it was a loose bolt for the control arm, finding the loose bolt found the problem…
Seems like a different member suggested checking all the bolts to make sure they were tight…

But the credit goes to the shop for finding the problem…

No dispute, you did suggest that someone should go over all the bolts to make sure they are tight. It isn’t clear this is would have discovered this specific problem, but would have been a step in the right direction . Tightening all the bolts seems like a good idea for most any automobile problem.

The bolts can be really snug if you will (under torqued), and will not show up by doing the normal shake down (including checking bushings), meaning everything seems tight…

I have ran across this more than once with control arms, ball joints, hub bearings etc etc, and even after other shops gave up, a lot of techs don’t take the extra time to go over bolts…
If the bushings look good, even using a prybar to test movement might not pick up an under torqued bolt…

So again, good job by the tech that took the extra time and stayed with it until the issue was found…

Now I am not taking anything away from anyone here and I am pretty sure that anyone of the pro techs here would have found the issue eventually… EDIT eventually probably not the correct word, I meant more of a sooner rather than later type thing… lol

When we were first married and lived in an apartment I paid extra for a garage. Luckily it had lights and an outlet. I did repairs including body work, brakes, tune ups, etc. I even stained 80 sheets of siding for our house. No one said anything. Spose everywhere is different.

I got a chuckle out of this. Hey, I could have found it eventually :grinning: I think most of the pros here would find it pretty quickly including some of the more capable DIYers. Just ribbing on ya!

I agree 100% with what you’re saying. A broken cage/captive nut could even be properly torqued but without the retention mechanism, it will probably loosen over time. I’ve had to fix lots of them while restoring vehicles. Some captive nuts people broke and bent the cages to get a rusted nut off the bolt and never fixed the cage. Other spot welded nuts that broke free and people gave up trying to fix it and left the fasteners loose.

It’s not hard to fix which is why I think it’s even more egregious to send it off with less than proper repair. Especially a suspension fastener. Hopefully, a more competent and conscientious person fixes this for the OP…
