(The clacking noise I’m referring to is the last 2-3 seconds of the video)
A couple days ago, I put in UEL headers in my 2.5i. It is completely catless and has a small muffler. When I cruise nicely, it sounds nice and mellow but when I press the gas down more than half way, no matter what gear I’m in or rpm, it will have this loud clacking noise. Is this normal or is it a leak? I checked for leaks but couldn’t find anything. When I’m on the highway going more than 40 and I press the gas pedal down to recreate the noise, it doesn’t make the loud clacking noise. What could this be?
I’d like to help you but I won’t because you are fouling the air that everyone else breathes by deleting your cats. That is illegal for you to do this as well.
The noise you hear might be detonation burning a hole in your pistons. Or it might be normal sounds from headers. You will find out soon enough. Sleep well!
That’s the sound of a 4 cylinder engine that needs its muffler and cat converter put back on.
To paraphrase Tom Lehrer:
An exhaust system is like a sewer. What you get out depends on what you put in!
If you want a nice exhaust sound, get a vehicle with 2 (Harley twin), 8 or 12 cylinders. https://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/tom_lehrer_384842
I’m not listening to your sound opinions because you obviously are butt hurt because of my pollution. Boo hoo. I think the exhaust sounds very good except for one part of it and certainly doesn’t sound like a typical fart can exhaust. Has more depth of tone than a bland fart can exhaust
I have yet to hear any Subaru make a good exhaust note. Aircooled flat 4 Porsches with headers sound far, far better as do VWs. Same for any Italian inline 4. There is just something about Italian engineer’s ability to make brilliant sounding straight 4s. Well, at least until the cars break!
My guess, mixture is too rich , and the noise is excess gasoline in the exhaust stream igniting in the exhaust pipe. Suggest to ask shop do a fuel-trim test. If too rich mixture is the noise-cause , may be very difficult to fix b/c computer is presuming the originally configured exhaust system back-pressure.
If my theory is correct, expect to be making future repairs to the exhaust system.
Reminds me of Tom and Ray’s story about how as teenagers (presumably) they’d drive through a Boston tunnel, turning the key on & off to enrich the exhaust mixture, in order to make a big backfire “bang”, and that occasionally something on the car would fall off … lol …
