Yes–for the battery–but it won’t help her water-diluted motor oil if she has been changing it on the basis of odometer mileage.

I suspect that the new battery you just purchased was not fully charged when it was installed. If so, even a 40 minute drive might not be enough. Once you know that it is truly fully charged, and you are driving for 40 minutes occasionally, then if you have troubles, you can rule out the battery.
Also, if you are handy, disconnecting the negative terminal cable when not in uise can also give diagnostic information.

Yes to that possibility. In the old days we added the electrolyte to the battery, charged it, then installed it. Now charged batteries sit on the shelf gradually losing their charge prior to installation.
