I own a Buick Lucerne 2009 with 170,000 miles that is in good shape. Sometimes, when I stop at a stop sign and try to turn right or left, the steering wheel locks up with the car running at an idle speed. As soon as I give more rpm, the steering is okay. This only happens a few times a month. 3 weeks ago, it happened 3 times in 15 minutes and then the next stop didn’t do it. According to the local GM dealer, they say GM has no record of something like that happening. Do you have any suggestions as to what would be causing this? I would appreciate any information you are able to provide.
There is only one complaint about power steering going out on your car.Read on
I suspect this is either because of a glazed accessory drive belt, improper tension . . . perhaps due to a bad automatic tensioner
Is the fluid level correct?
No offense, but I’m pretty sure the steering wheel isn’t actually locking up
I think at that moment when you think it’s locked up, you’ve temporarily lost power steering assist, possibly due to the reasons I stated
