Should a catalytic converter go bad on a 2007 Lucerne already? 50k miles. If so what could cause it?
Normally no. But anything is possible.
Two things cause catalytic converter damage. Thermal shock or poisoning. Thermal shock causes the catalyst substrate to melt or break apart. Poisoning is from substances that coat the substrate.
But it really doesn’t matter. The catalytic converter is coverd for 8 years/80,000 miles by the vehicle manufacturer. So since they’re the ones that have to replace it for free, let them figure out what killed the cat.

Good reply Tester! A third thing that can go wrong is external damage caused on bad roads or driving over solid objects.
