brake light goes off and on , brakes are spongy and very hard.
I presume you mean the brake pedal feels spongy (more movement that expected) when you first press on the pedal, then it seems to catch, but then it feels extra hard.
Any work done on the brakes before this occurred? If so, possible that air remains in system. Master cylinder, Caliper, ABS, rubber brake hose problems possible also.
