Another thing… was the previous owner in the habit of driving around with ten thousand pounds of keys on the chain? 2005 seems a little young for this to happen, but it’s possible that the ignition lock is worn and is actually “turning off”, which would kill the engine and lock the steering. I don’t know if you would actually see the key turn in the switch, or if it could happen with the key still in the “run” position.
