2003 Ford F-150 overdrive & cold weather

Dear Car Talk,
I have my second F-150. The first was a 97’, it died with over 523,000 miles, the second is an 03’. Both came with a 4.6 liter V8, not the juice, and overdrive. Both are and have been extremely dependable. I live in Ohio, where occasionally it gets into the 20’s. The issue is that when those temperatures occur, it takes about four to five miles before the transmisson shifts into the overdrive. Why??? This type of thing does not happen with my other cars.

Mr. Ed

Are you sure it’s overdrive your experiencing? The torque converter locks at between 40 and 50 mpg if certain conditions are met. Temperature is one of those conditions
