2002 Camaro HVAC "high/low vent"

The knob that controls where the air flow is routed no longer seems to be working, the AC, heater, defroster and fan all work fine but the air flow is stuck blowing at my feet. I think the “flaps” that control this are vacuum actuated but I don?t think there is a leak as the car runs fine, any ideas?

You can’t discount a vacuum leak in the climate control system because “the car runs fine.” The size of the hose running to the controls limits the volume of any possible leak to an amount that won’t affect the running of the engine.

I agree. A quick way for the average driver to check this out is to drive down a hilly stretch of road. As you reach the top of the hill let off the accelerator quickly. This will cause a rise in engine vacuum. This will usually cause the blend doors to operate normally for a short time. As soon as you accelerate again the problem will return.

You can then find the vacuum leak yourself or get a good mechanic to do it. The mechanic will have the proper tools to find it quickly.

I think you folks are correct - I spent the day checking the vacuum hoses at the switch and under the glove box and found no vacuum with the engine running - I also found that the windhield washer hose at the 90 degree rubber coupler at the pump/resevoir was “chewed” and started to leak when I activated the washers, so I think I may have critters at work here. I checked the vacuume hoses under the hood where the AC piping goes through the fire wall and found no vacuum there either. I think there is a “vacuum tank” somewhere (looking at a diagram for a 1995 model) that I have not been able to find - I assume this is the point where the engin vacuum hose goes first? Anyone know where it is on a 2002 Camaro or have any other suggestions? thanks folks

Found the problem, it was critters - they chewed the vacuume line between the intake manafold and the vacuume check valve, a 1/4" drip line hose (like for your garden) tightly slipped over both sides for 2-3 inches did the trick and all is well - also worked to replace the rubber elbow by the windshield washer pump that had been chewed, great stuff! Now all I need is to figure out how to keep the critters from doing it again! Thanks for your help folks.
