Going into town one morning about sunup I saw lights way back and showed down; assuming it was the law and I was speeding.
As the vehicle got closer I saw a white Dodge pickup but in the mirror something looked out of whack on the right front.
As he started to pass doing 65 or so I could see the RF wheel with what must have been 5 or 6 degrees of negative camber in it. Ball joints are about to go.
I rolled my window down and got his attention as he passed; me furiously pointing at the RF wheel. He had a death grip on the steering wheel, gave me a thumbs up with a nod, and kept on motoring.
I hit the brakes to get away from him; assuming he was going to buy the farm very soon. A few blocks in tail, I kept waiting for the accident and it did not take long. About 2-3 miles later the right front suspension (wheel, knuckle, and all) broke free from the truck. His truck gouged a 100 or so feet of asphalt before going into the ditch and the suspension/wheel rocketed into the barbed wire fence where it pulled a tennis ball maneuver and flew back to the barbed wire on the other side of the highway.
He was getting out of the truck and I did not even slow down to check on him. Truck sat in the ditch for 3 or 4 days before it was hauled off. The guy obviously knew the ball joints were shot and had no qualms about running highway speeds. Bucking for a Darwin Award I guess but he got lucky.
