1998 sebring gas mileage

I checked the mileage on a 1998 sebring that I bought a month ago. It is a six cylinder and it is only getting 13 miles to the gallon. Most of the driving is in the city. Is that about average? I thought a six would get better than 13 MPG.

That model–in perfect working order–is rated by The EPA at 17 mpg city/25 mpg highway.

Are the tires inflated correctly?
Is the Check Engine Light illuminated?
Is your specimen in perfect working order?
Are you carrying any extra, unnecessary weight in the car?
Do you use drive-up windows at banks and fast food joints?

And, perhaps most important of all…
What can you tell us about its maintenance over the past 3 years?

The fuel mileage should be better than that.

Since you’ve just bought this vehicle and if you don’t know the maintanence history, you might have the thermostat replaced. If the thermostat is stuck open the engine will use more fuel than normal.

Have the plugs ever been replaced, and how is the air filter. Many things affect gas mileage.

Thanks for the feedback. Yes I did change the air filter and checked the tire pressure but thats about it. I will have the station check the thermostat.
