Yes sorry for the late response, I replied above. Thank you again.
There is no engagement in forward or reverse, I will raise the wheels off ground and test to see as I have not tried that yet.
Hi
sorry for the late response, I’m ride sharing at the moment so I get home from work late and leave very early in the morning and work on the truck whatever time I have in between so time has been limited.
Ok to begin; there was a code but I will have to rerun it to tell you exactly what it is. I only have a Actron OBD2 reader so it was just a generic transmission code it didn’t specify what or where the issue was occurring.
I did take the valve body completely apart, cleaned everything with brake cleaner and replaced all gaskets etc. I bought and installed a full overhaul kit so it had new ■■■■■ for the choke valves and everything.
I did find the original reason for failure (it was an overdrive sprag that went bad and some burnt up clutch plates.) I bought a new sprag and as I mentioned the overhaul kit, also replaced the transmission speed sensor and the TCM wiring harness that connects to the shift solenoids and comes out the side of the transmission.
As far as my reference I used diagrams from charm.li and some 4r44e rebuild videos from YouTube. Yes I know how that sounds, but it’s the resources I have and how I have successfully done pretty much everything I’ve needed to do as far as work on my vehicles for years.
It is definitely the transmission or the torque converter. Everything worked fine before until the overdrive sprag went out.
Yes that is the diagram for my valve body. Thank you I will use that to go back through it and make sure everything is in correct order.
Thank you so much for your reply. I am just absolutely stumped on what is going on so all the help is greatly appreciated.
Yea I definitely don’t have a new topic button anywhere
Yes, with the wheels off the ground, see if you have forward/reverse engagement, and if it will shift through the gears in D as well as manual M1, M2 and D, shift up/down a few time, see if anything changes from cold to full operating temp, once fully warm with the engine still running, put in neutral and check the fluid level, if low adjust as needed and try it again…
Since you are pulling the valve body (and probably the trans again) it is a good idea to do a correction/update/upgrade to the valve body, here is the kit… SK 44-55E
If the EPC (electronic pressure control) solenoid sticks, it can/will keep the vehicle from moving, so replace it no matter what, they go bad…
Here is the PDF for the kit…
I maybe wrong, but something is telling me you installed the OD Sprag backwards…?
Here is a couple of decent (free) pdf manuals to read…
But you really need a quality ($not free$) manual on the 4R44E transmission
And here is a (IIRC) a good paid manual, might be able to find it in paper somewhere…
A couple of possibility’s from some other trans builders…
Overdrive planet sprag race broke loose . Tighten front band down then see if it moves (just a test)
Center support bolt not tight or left out. Stripped splines in the TC could also affect both directions. V.B. get tightened?
And a question;
does it actually not have reverse? Or does it bind? Feel like you are power breaking it?
Hi wanted to give you an update, it was thanks to the stuff you sent me I figured out what the problem was! It was the manual valve! It slid all the way into the valve body and I forgot to connect it to the shift linkage inside the pan! Stupid mistake I know but now it’s connected and going into all gears and driving. Unfortunately the transmission has a bad shudder so I will have to take it off and go back through everything again but I am one step closer to having everything figured out. I just wanted to thank you again for all your help!
Is your EPC solenoid working correctly?
What speed(s) is the shudder happening?? and does touching the brake pedal with your left foot (while maintaining the same speed with your right foot) a little make it stop??
And what ATF did you put in it??
If you used a universal, or a one fluid fits all/most type of ATF, then just because it has the correct additives for your trans, doesn’t mean that the also added correct additives for a different trans, that those other additives play nice with your transmissions, the additives have to play nice with the clutch/band fabrics material…
I would flush out the universal fluid really good and then put the correct Mercon V ATF for your transmission, and then add some LubeGard 60902or LubeGard 63010 and LubeGard Instant Shudder Fix to the fluid…
You should use the LubeGard 60902 or 63010 and mainly the LubeGard Instant Shudder Fix anyway, regardless, even with the correct ATF…
Anyway… That’s kinda funny cause I was gonna ask you about the manual valve, if it was hooked up properly, but I got to much in thought and forgot… And naww, forgetting to hook up something like that isn’t a stupid mistake, tons of parts in a transmission that can be overlooked, stuff happens.. A stupid mistake is rolling out from under the vehicle after installing it and seeing your new torque converter on the bench, and no I have never done that… lol…
But I did loose 2 springs for my sprag one time, looked everywhere for them, put the transmission together using 2 old spring (of many) and then looked over and saw them laying on the floor, so I disassembled the transmission all the way back down just to install the missing 2 sprag springs… The sprag was the very 1st thing to be installed on the trans I was building…
EDITed to add the main thing, LubeGard Instant Shudder Fix…
Yes, it should have been replaced anyway…
EDIT: Also use Lubegard 19610 Instant Shudder Fixx, 2 oz for the shudder issue before you rebuild the rebuild…
This is for the main shudder issue…

And a link to the LubeGard 60902
Both links are from The LubeGard Store on Amazon pulled off the main LubeGard website…
I have been using both products since the mid 90’s…
When I got my 70 Cutlass it had AAMCO paperwork in the glovebox from the previous owner. Shortly after buying it, the linkage fell off! AAMCO fix it under warranty, never had any further issues.
Regarding vehicle #2,
Why not keep information about a 1998 Ranger all in one place?
Having more than one vehicle discussed in a single thread becomes confusing.

Regarding the 2nd vehicle,
I see. I propose putting text like the above in all replies to this conversation to make it less confusing.
