1997 right upper ball joint

I brought my 1997 GMC Jimmy in for an annual safety inspection and the mechanic said my right upper ball joint was about to break and I shouldnt be driving it. However my tires have excellent tread and my steering is fine. The mechanic lifted up the front end on a jack and showed me that the right wheel wiggled a little. He said the wheel should not move at all. I have heard of mechanic scams before on ball joint replacements. He said $1200 to fix the right and left upper ball joint and tire rod. I can’t afford this because I wont even be able to drive it anymore to work because the mechanic said not to drive it.

Take it to another mechanic and get a second opinion. Take it to a shop that does front-end alignments and see what they say. Don’t mention the first mechanic.
