This is a general question about car design. Why do they put oil filters in sideways? You wouldn’t spill any oil if it was hung vertical. I’ll look for your answer in the Sunday paper.
I doubt if you can contact Ray or the column through this Forum site . But it is simply a space and design that puts the filter location where it is .

I own 2 cars with vertical filters. Both spill oil when I unscrew them. So it doesn’t matter in what position they place the filter.
