A friend of mine was bragging about how reliable his 97 Buick LeSabre with 150,000 miles has been. He is not at all mechanical, so I asked him if he had changed the timing belt, and he said that he had not. So we looked at the maintenance schedule in the owner’s manual and found no reference to the timing belt. Does this car use a chain or some other method that does not require periodic maintenance?

Yep, it has a good old-fashioned timing chain, which is not a regular maintenance item.
