It over heated after driving all day had to put coolant in radiator and water
And? Twenty six year old car, with unknown mileage, unknown maintenance history, what are you asking? Are you asking if fixing your cooling systems is worth the cost? That is a decision only you can answer. Are you asking if your engine is toast? Ask your mechanic.

I assume you want to know what happened. There are a number of possibilities, especially considering the age of your vehicle:
- The cooling system has a blockage and needs to be flushed.
- There’s a leak in your cooling system somewhere and you finally lost enough coolant to cause a problem.
- You had an incorrect coolant mixture.
- The thermostat is stuck.
- The cooling fan isn’t working, because the fan motor is bad, the fan relay is bad, the temperature sensor is bad, or there’s a wiring problem.
A qualified mechanic can diagnose the problem and make recommendations.
