I have a 2009 Toyota Matrix with the 2.4 L engine. Is the an engine that would be damaged due to broken timing belt?

Nope, because it doesn’t have a timing belt.

A broken timing chain is unlikely unless you totally ignore the noise it makes when it needs replacement.
