@TwinTurbo illustration shows EXACTLY how it happened. Orange car clipped the Blue car in the front as the blue car was going to turn right (based on turn signal), turn left for a wider turn.
THAT makes sense. But I guess if orange had a dash cam, it would prove that blue was at fault for veering left, into orangeās lane, before turning right.

Clip the left side door panels of blue? Perhaps. Clip Blueās left rear fender? Most likely.
But If I were Orange, I donāt know if Iād be able to react quickly enough to brake in time to avoid hitting blue - even if we were both not speeding.
Sure doesnāt look like B(orange) clipping the front of A(blue). More like orange sideswiping some portion of the left side of blue, which even I can totally see happening. MikeInNH insists that B āclipped the front of Aā. Front, as even my compromised brain comprehends it, is the forward-most part of something, in this case, the parts of two objects moving forward.
In fairness, to shift blame onto Orange(B) for the whole incident is indicative of our current litigative climate: Blame and penalize the victim instead of the root cause.
Blue is entirely to blame, Orange is blameless. In most states, you can be cited for weaving in your own lane, failing to maintain your lane, reckless driving, or driving under the influence (DUI) for this little lefty-right turnā¦
Virginia law, specifically Section 46.2-846 of the Code of Virginia, states that a driver intending to turn right at an intersection onto a highway must approach and make the turn as close as practicable to the right curb or edge of the roadway. Additionally, all drivers must give the proper turn signal before turning, lane changing, or entering or exiting a highway, as required by Section 46.2-838 of the Virginia DMV.
And if there are any naysayers who still think Orange is blameless or Blue shares responsibility I would suggest you spend a few minutes researching the driving laws in your localā¦
I am ācluelessā which āCā member has the Florida License so I researched Florida State Law alsoā¦
Florida Statute 316.151 states that a driver intending to turn right at an intersection must approach the turn as close as possible to the right-hand curb or edge of the roadway and then make the turn onto the roadway as close to the right-hand curb or edge as practicable. This ensures a safe and efficient turn by keeping the vehicle in the proper lane and preventing obstruction of other traffic.
Can we āstick a fork in this topicā and say itās done?
If I observed those stipulations to the letter, Iād catch my right-rear tire on the curb every single time I turned right onto another road or into a driveway or parking lot! I already have been doing such in my estimation 60 percent of right turns Iāve made since the 1990s, in cars as big as a 1981 midsize Buick and my current Accord, and in smaller rides like my Contour and 2015 Elantra.
Thatās why I may veer left imperceptibly, never nearly as much as driver A(Blue) in MikeNHās example, but more critically I try to start my turn-in as far past the intended corner as is possible, without coming face to face with drivers exiting the side road Iām turning right onto.
āPut a fork inā? No way! Itās been a spirited discussion, even with some disagreement on blame among drivers A & B, and comprehension issues on my part.
You know Chris, if I told you to clip your fingernails you do not need to clip them so close to the ā ā ā ā to draw blood, any more than your need to āapproach the turn as close as possible to the right-hand curbā to clip your rear tire on the curbā¦
But for goodness sake, do not weave so far to the left to scare the bejeezus out of the driver in the Left Lane, or so far to actually enter their lane and possibly hit them.
^^Admins, please^^ enough! Fix this automated censoring system so I can once again read and comprehend posts here. Itās getting ridiculous.
LoudThunder: Will you authorize me to āreportā your reply above only in the context of pointing out how carried away this new censoring/black boxing had gotten on here? If you do not respond to this request, it will be taken respectfully as a āNoā. Thanks!
As I stated in my last post, I slowly veer left, maybe a couple inches at most, and not at all right turns, before turning right. It depends on the individual turn or intersection.
I still scrub the right rear even if Iām at least 1m from the curb upon approach to my right turn.
I did not dig the original posting out of the archives, it popped up under the unread postings, and as Homer mentions, āWell, Excuse meā¦ā I did not notice the original date it was postedā¦
However, did you notice it still strikes a cord with the members, but it turned into whoās right and whoās wrong and no one seemed to take into account what the law say about thisā¦
So, Iāll stop posting on this topic, if you doā¦
And nor does it matter what the last posting date was, and whether or not you noticed.
Iāve said it in Car Talk Community, and in other forums to which I subscribe: I could care less how old a thread is, particularly as you said, if it popped up in your unread or āmight be of interestā listing. Iād rather contribute to that thread than start a new āturn left when they turn rightā thread, even if it ticks off some folks. Life is too short to be obsessed about the age of forum threads. Unless an old thread looks toxic and conflict-ridden, I say⦠participate, and be merry!
You do you. No need to follow the āherdā(clique). Participate away!
