When to change your oil

I salute you for your position actually. Matter of fact, I strongly urge you to goad all of your friends, neighbors, relatives, and in-laws into doing the same.

The last oil change with our car with an oil change countdown computer lasted over 12,000 miles. The oil still had some clarity to it and I would not call it dirty by what I have seen before with older cars using dino oil. The difference with the countdown computer is like being blind and being able to see. The guesswork, speculation could be gone and this would be a topic for little discussion on Car Talk if other brands that have not yet followed GM’s lead with oil change monitors would get off of the dime and go do it.

For your driving conditions, vehicles, and ownership period it may work fine.

Only a few V6’s from the mid-90’s, mostly in Camry’s.

I had a Toyota Pickup with 356,000 miles on it, 5K change intervals, and the engine was cracked open for a headgasket job at 250,000 miles. You could still see the factory cross-hatch pattern on the cylinder walls. That truck met its end due to a retaining wall, but it saved my wife’s life.

I have a '92 Toyota Celica with 365,000 miles on it currently, an '88 Supra with 256,000 miles on it, all with 5K oil change intervals and dino oil.

We also had an '82 Honda Prelude with 275,000 miles on it, traded to a 1997 Suzuki Sidekick that did 175,000 miles before we lost it to a roll-over accident. We then purchased a 2000 Ford Explorer from my parents. We are using the OLM on it, and it has done 206,000 miles so far without any problems.

Yes, I do not think all of Toyota’s motors are affected but some, hence the 3k change just to be sure.In a world that is uncertain better safe than sorry.

Are you buying highmileage cars to brag about them? I honestly don’t think two people could drive that far in a lifetime. Just kidding don’t post the original window stickers or anything.

10k oil changes. Never failed me …well…Just had motor rebuilt. 78k miles. I still don’t think it has anything to do with oil.

Changing the oil every 5000 miles is a easy way to remember. Just change the oil when the odometer hits 5000k, and when 10,000 mile turns over. This makes it less likely to forget, or lose track of the the last time the oil was changed.

I always found Sunday the official day to check the oil, and other fluids in the cars.

Is that a JOKE…if not…it’s probably the dumbest statement I ever heard.

Only a couple of Toyota engines over a 2-3 year period had problems with slugging. The problem was Toyota to decrease emissions made the cooling journals smaller so it would increase the internal temperature of the engine…thus lowering emissions. The problem was it caused the oil to sludge prematurely…EVEN CARS WITH 5K OIL CHANGES. The solution was to go 3k oil changes or use a full synthetic oil which is far less susceptible to slugging.

WHEN DID YOU EVER FIND ANY TIME TO WORK OR SLEEP?

My favorite color is green.
