What gets damaged when fuel tank over-filled?

Mountainbike:

California had its own standards years before the federal and 49 states. A colleague worked for IBM and got transferred in the 60s to San Jose. His wife bought a Ford Pinto. At the time fuel evaporation was identified as a main source of smog formation and they had those clumsy hoses that fit snugly over the filler opening. Most federal legislation followed California’s.

All these California legislated items made for poor driveability.

I can’t peg the exact dates that California installed all these items but I never recommended anyone to buy a California car because of the less that perfect technology of these items.

Point well made. It is true that Ca. was well ahead of the federal legislation on this issue.
I acquiesce with respect.

Sorry for the confusion. I didn’t intend to say that my 70’s and 90’s cars don’t have an evap system using charcoal canisters to trap the fumes, as both my vehicles do use canisters with associated purging mechanisms . I meant that my older vehicle’s evap systems aren’t as complicated as the ones on newer cars is all.
