What all to take from a car before a junkyard hauls it away?

We had a friend from Illinois that was a Volvo fan. When he visited I suggested he check out the guy just outside of town that had 15 or so Volvos around his house. Dont know if he collected fixed them or what. Haven’t been by there in a while so maybevdied.

In my diesel olds days I got to the point of replacing my own injector pumps to avoid the $500 expense. So I ended up with a spare pump on the shelf with th3 car long gone. When I took a load to the recycler, i gave the guy the pump. This was a stanadyne injector pump worth $500 rebuilt but he just threw it in the barrel.

When my father in law became unable to care for himself, he and the MIL moved into a senior care facility. They moved into a 2 bedroom cottage and took a lot of stuff with them, but there was a lot that we had to get rid of too. There were two walk-in closets with treasures neatly stacked to the ceiling. We had several runs to the junk yard and several to Goodwill, and the family took a lot with them. We repeated it recently when the MIL moved into the permanent care facility. FIL passed a few years ago, btw. Oh, and my wife’s side of the garage has a lot of stuff from her mom’s place to sort through. One day she might park in the garage again.

Same, the wifey and myself are mom’s fulltime care taker, moved in when I had to take dad’s keys from him about a year before he passed away, they kept all the paper work for everything, I found recites from when dad built this house in 72 as well as for every repair ever made and every warranty and or manual for everything… Plus he still had EVERY real estate deal he ever made… Every piece of healthcare paper work…
So far I had filled two 96 gallon trash cans to be recycled… I still have another full commercial filing cabinet to go through and then all the normal stuff…

A note about scrap metal dealers; they pay by weight. Today I way quoted $60/ton for steel, I didn’t ask about car bodies.

If the catalytic converter, alternator, battery and radiator are missing, price per ton is the same. Don’t send good cores to the shredder.

Yeah, this describes at least one of my family members to a “T”. Unfortunately I think all of the vintage receipts and paperwork are up in the attic…Sigh.

There won’t be mich that will fit your Neon But I would see if they use any light bulbs or relays. Theives steal cataylitic converters for the platinum so there must be a market for them and you have the registration for the car thery came off of/

I took the battery, and may use it in my Dodge Neon, even though it’s not technically the “correct” group size. I’m going to pull the rear deck and front door panels to remove the speakers. I might be able to adapt these speakers to fit my Sundance if I ever get that car running again. I don’t know if it’s worth keeping the radiator, although it was expensive to buy, I don’t know if there’s a market for it. I am going to keep the coolant expansion tank, and many of the molded hoses which I installed in this car, as they can likely be adapted to fit other cars that I own, or will own in the future. I pulled the rear oxygen sensor, but the exhaust pipe was full of rusty water, so it may not work. I borrowed an electric fuel pump from a coworker, which is designed for pumping the fuel out of the tank for repairs, so I will try to reuse the fuel.

There’s being economical

And there’s being a miserable cheapskate

Which are you @bcohen2010 ?:face_with_tongue:

There is an electric fuel pump inside the tank in the ideal location. All you need to do is turn it on.

The scrap value for the radiator is only about $5, not worth the effort unless you have 10 or more to scrap.

Audio speakers are a common fit; 6 1/2" diameter speakers will work in the Neon front doors and rear deck.

If the rear view mirror has a common mount, keep it as a spare.

Well, as the saying goes, I am as cheap as the day is long!

“Thrifty” makes sense but your time is valuable and don’t waste it foolishly.

If you’re still working the value is your wage and if you’re retired and facing “the end of your personal time” it’s even more valuable.

So if you insist, take what parts you see as valuable and don’t have an immediate need for and post them on Craigs List for a couple of dollars. The buyer will thank you, they’ll stay out of the landfill and ultimately your heirs won’t be cursing you for leaving a bunch of junk for them to clear out.

I’m a cheapskate and it would take me 10 minutes to pump $40 worth of gasoline from one car to another.

Some people fear saving too many auto parts to discard. I have space in the back yard for recyclable materials, things others have thrown in the trash. I have been collecting cores and scrap metal for years.

Tuesday, I took a small load to the scrap metal dealer, aluminum wheels are paying $1.15/lb.;

12 wheels - $362
68 lbs. cast aluminum (oil pans/suspension parts) $49
3 lbs. brass oil coolers $12
