My S60 makes a low humming sound at random times and speeds. It remains for a few seconds or minutes. It will stop when I touch the gas pedal. It’s coming from the front of the car.

Any ideas as to what it might be?

I had a similar problem with my 2000 Blazer, I traced the noise to my accelerator cable. I checked under the hood and one of its tie downs was broken. The cable was vibrating and making the noise. I secured the cable and the noise went away.

Noises like this can be really tough to find. I had one on my old pickup where the hood was just barely vibrating at the spring loaded pad at the hood’s front corner only at a specific resonant frequency. Once I found it (by sheer luck), a quick and slight adjustment of the pad stopped it.
