Toyota Turbo V6 recalls

If damage is found, the engine would be removed, crankshaft reconditioned and new bearings installed. Modern engines are not tolerant to metal shavings in the block or cylinder head galleries so a complete rebuild or replacement is necessary.

The engine in my 1996 Stratus has a bedplate below the crankshaft, not a new engine design. This creates a much stronger bottom end than the old “4 bolt mains” (main bearing caps with 4 bolts).

It is common sense that the excuse of “machining debris left in the engine” is a lie. It was a lie when Hyundai trotted out this nonsense regarding its “GDI” engines which were failing in large numbers, and it’s a lie today when Toyota says this about its engines which are failing. We know this is a lie, because as another poster alluded to, the failures occur between 30,000 and 70,000 miles. Very, very few occur at less than 30,000 miles.

If the debris was in the engine from day one, we would expect to see a lot more engines fail at lower mileage.

I suspect the truth is that something in the engine comes apart, creating this debris WHILE THE ENGINE IS OPERATING, and this debris ultimately causes the bearings to fail.

That’s why we should all buy 1997 Camrys and Dodge Shadows:wink:

Without tearing one down for an inspection, my thinking is it is not machining debris per say, but casting flash that probably should have been removed but was missed for one reason or another, it can take many miles, if ever depending on the thickness of the flash, to break off and cause issues… That would be the reason an engine would fail from it at higher miles vs very low mileage…

I’ve torn down old engines with over 100K miles on them and found flash still attached to the block and wondered how it never broke off… Hot/cold cycles and vibrations can cause flash to break off while in-service, most hot rodders will remove as much flash as possible on engines while torn down for a refresh/rebuild…

It appears somebody doesn’t understand what casting flash /debris is and doesn’t realize it can break off at any time during the engines life.
